It does not allow the biosynthesis of sterols in fungal cell membranes. Sterols are important for cell structure and function, without these spore formation and mycelium growth does not take place. Difenoconazole inhibits the C14-demethylation step in sterol biosynthesis in the fungal cell membranes which leads to structural instability and death of cells. Its systemic movement provides deep penetration and its translaminar activity enables it to protect against hidden pests.
