Herbicides

What are Herbicides and why growers use them

Herbicides are products that control weeds in the field. Weeds are unwanted plants that compete with crops for sunlight, nutrients, water and space. If they are not managed on time, they can slow down the crop growth, reduce yield and even make harvesting more difficult. Herbicides either kill the weeds completely or stop them from growing further. They can be used before sowing, after sowing, or during crop growth depending on the type of weed problem and the herbicide chosen.

Why Herbicides are important

Removing weeds by hand takes a lot of time and labour. It also costs more, and in cases where the weed growth is heavy, it might not even be possible to do it effectively. Herbicides make this process much faster. A well timed spray not only controls weeds but also reduces stress on the crop. When crops are free from weed competition in the early stages, they grow faster, absorb more nutrients and give better yields.

Herbicides work in different ways. Some work on contact, burning or damaging the weeds as soon as they are sprayed. Others are systemic, meaning they enter the weed and move through its system to stop its internal functions so the plant dies. Choosing the correct Herbicide is important because different weeds respond to different actives, and crops also have varying levels of tolerance.

Where they are used

Herbicides are used in many field crops like paddy, wheat, maize, soybean, cotton and sugarcane. They are also important in horticultural crops such as tea, banana and citrus to keep the rows clean and reduce the chance of diseases that can spread from dense weed growth. Pre-emergent Herbicides are applied before the weeds germinate to stop them from coming up. Post emergent Herbicides are sprayed after weeds are visible.

In zero tillage and conservation farming systems, Herbicides are very important because they allow weed control without ploughing or disturbing the soil. This helps in moisture conservation and reducing soil erosion.
