Micronutrients fertilizer
What are Micronutrient fertilizers and why crops need them
Micronutrient fertilizers are products that give plants small but very important elements which they need to grow well. These include zinc, boron, iron, manganese, copper, molybdenum and a few more. The plant needs them in very tiny amounts compared to nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but without them the growth will not be complete. Even if NPK is given in proper balance, if one micronutrient is missing the plant can still suffer.
Micronutrients play many roles inside the plant. They are part of enzymes that run the plant’s chemical processes. They help in making chlorophyll, moving sugars from leaves to fruits, controlling plant hormones, and making the plant more resistant to some diseases. When any one of these nutrients is low the plant may show symptoms like yellow leaves, curling, poor fruit setting, stunted growth or delayed maturity. This is more common in soils that are alkaline, sandy, or have been farmed intensively for many years.
Why they matter in farming
Many growers focus only on the big three nutrients, NPK. But if a crop misses zinc or boron at a critical stage, the damage is done before the grower even sees the symptoms. Micronutrient fertilizers help fill that gap. Zinc improves enzyme activity and root growth. Boron is important for pollen tube growth and seed setting. Iron helps make chlorophyll so the leaves can photosynthesise properly. Manganese plays a role in nitrogen use and photosynthesis. Over the season this translates to healthier plants, better quality produce and higher yields. The effect is sometimes not instant but it builds up over time.
Where and how they are used
Micronutrient fertilizers can be applied to the soil, sprayed on leaves, or given through drip irrigation depending on the crop and timing. Wheat, maize and rice often respond well to zinc. Sugarcane, grapes and apples need boron at certain stages. Iron is critical for paddy and soybean. Vegetables like tomato and okra, fruit crops like citrus, guava, banana, and even flowers benefit from timely application.
