Chlorothalonil is a broad-spectrum contact fungicide which belongs to the chloronitrile group. It is largely used in preventive control of different types of crops like vegetables, fruits, cereals and ornamental plants. It slows down the different enzymatic processes in the fungal cell which prevents spore germination and mycelium growth. Its multi-site inhibitor action (targeting various enzymes and metabolic processes of the fungus life cycle) decreases the chances of resistance development which makes it an effective solution for managing fungal pathogen disease like late blight, early blight, downy mildew and leaf spot disease.
Chlorothalonil works as a multi-site contact fungicide meaning it reduces various fungal enzymes and metabolic processes by breaking down multiple sites on the fungal cell which primarily affects spore germination and causes toxicity to the fungal cell membrane. It also acts as a protectant by creating a barrier on plant leaves to stop fungal infection.
