Profenofos 50% EC is a non-systemic, contact and stomach insecticide/acaricide belonging to the organophosphate group. Its chemical name is O-(4-Bromo-2-chlorophenyl)-O-ethyl-S-propyl phosphorothioate.
Profenofos 50% EC is used for the control of a wide range of sucking pests and foliar-feeding larvae in several crops, including cotton and vegetables.
It is known for its dual insecticidal and acaricidal properties, providing both quick knockdown and residual protection.
Profenofos acts as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor in the insect nervous system. By blocking the enzyme responsible for breaking down acetylcholine, it causes accumulation of this neurotransmitter at nerve junctions, leading to overstimulation, paralysis, and ultimately insect death. The compound contains a chiral phosphorus atom, and its optical isomers contribute to variations in insecticidal potency and enzyme inhibition.
