Chlorpyriphos acts by interfering with the normal transmission of nerve impulses in insects. It irreversibly inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), responsible for breaking down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This results in the accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve endings, causing continuous nerve stimulation, paralysis, and ultimately, insect death.
